Overview

Eskom NTCSA is issuing a Request for Information on Grid Forming Technologies to collect industry input on GFM capabilities, particularly grid-forming Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), associated tests, standards, and deployment considerations. This is a market-sounding exercise; interested suppliers and technology providers should respond with capabilities, references, and supporting documentation.

Requirements

• Provide information on grid-forming technologies and your GFM BESS definition, including relevant technical standards.
• Demonstrate a traceable track record (GW/GWh) of GFM-capable deployments and global utility references.
• Submit evidence of testing and conformance to international codes/standards for voltage/angle formation, inertial and damping capabilities, and system-strength support.
• Include capability curves, EMT/RMS models, and documentation of performance under varied conditions (SCR, temperature, altitude, SoC ranges).
• Address functions such as islanding, fault-ride-through, black start, voltage control, and interaction with multiple GFM units; provide related test results and field studies.
• Provide information on impacts to battery life or lifetime from providing these functions.

How to Apply

• Deadline: 31 August 2026, 10:00 SA time (RFI) (NTCSA RFI document).
• Submission: Electronically via NTCSA E-tendering site; upload PDF and Excel files only; max 50MB per file, total submissions up to 900MB; no zip files; no hard copy.
• Documents: Complete the Response Sheet (Part B) and attach supporting documentation as PDFs/Excel (see NTCSA RFI). Ensure submission status is marked complete.
